A Good Ba Sleep Routine Can Help Your Sleep

As amazing is a new child into a family, it can also be the start of many sleepless nights for the parents of the baby. A significant reason for this can be put down to the baby’s own sleep routine. A number of parents simply decide not to have any routine, and just follow the lead of their baby, feeding him or her when required, attending to the baby’s cries when they happen, and doing things around the clock.

This can be very draining and take a lot out of a the parent, especially if they are a new parent for the first time. It is widely accepted that you should not have a rigid plan of when to look after the baby, because things don’t always happen on schedule, especially when the child has only just entered the world. But at the same time, following the baby’s lead all the time can not wear out the parents, but also be less beneficial to the baby.

Follow the childs lead at first, but then start having a simple, but flexible, routine, based on these leads. A mother and father will then feel more in control, which is important when you’re going through something you haven’t experienced before. A newborn sleeps for the majority of their early life, in short bursts of a few hours, in between feeds. You can’t control when they will be hungry, and when they need to be changed, but by having a basic routine, it gives them structure, which can be comforting.So when a baby wakes up, it can be beneficial to do things in a similar order every day. You may start with feeding them, then changing their nappy, then play with them and talk to them, then put them back down for sleep. This type of familiarity can benefit both you and your child, and make things easier. Obviously this order won’t be appropriate all the time, but if you get into some kind of baby sleep routine it’s a good thing. During the night, you may change things up a bit and simply feed and change them, then skip the whole play and talk part and concentrate on settling them back down to go straight to sleep again.

When you do play with your baby, make sure you look for signs to know when they are getting tired. Young babies typically get sleepy after about 10 to 20 minutes. Whether it be some time having them stretch out their body, kicking on a blanket or just a simple cuddle, read their body language and when they look sleepy, put them back to rest.

If you’re struggling to get your baby back to sleep, you can try rocking and patting them or even singing to them. Every child is different so don’t be afraid to use trial and error, and see what works best for you.
